CIRCLEVILLE - Investigators are still working to determine the cause of a fire that displaced four people from their Mound Street homes about 3 p.m. Monday.
According to Captain Marc Zingarelli, acting chief of the Circleville Fire Department, the blaze started in the kitchen area of 161-Rear W. Mound St., which was completely gutted by the flames.
In addition to that unit's resident, three roommates who share an adjoining unit also were displaced Monday until minor damage can be repaired and utilities restored.
Zingarelli said the main structure at the front of the building, which houses additional apartments and at least one business, was unaffected by the fire.
No one was home in any of the units at the time of the fire, he said, which he believes was called in by a passerby.
Volunteers from the American Red Cross were on hand to assist the building's residents, and volunteers from Box65 also responded to assist firefighters at the scene.
The Pickaway Township Fire Department provided mutual aid to battle the blaze, Zingarelli said. Harrison Township crews also responded for mutual aid but were called off before they arrived.
