The Pickaway County Master Gardener Volunteers will host its third annual Master Gardener Founders Celebration at 7 p.m. June 10 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 135 E. Mound St., Circleville. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

This event is in memory of Martha Beck and Marilyn (Lyn) Fisher, who worked tirelessly to establish the local Master Gardener Volunteers Program.

The guest speaker is Cheryl Harner, environmental educator. Her talk will be "Lawns and Lawn Alternatives." Quote: "If the only thing moving in your yard is your mower, it is time to re-think your landscape. Consider creating an easy maintenance, enviro-friendly yard which invites butterflies and birds! You can do better than bluegrass."

Harner is interested in all forms of flora and fauna and fascinated by the connections between botany and wildlife. She is an avid gardener and life-long wildflower and butterfly enthusiast. Her extensive volunteer work includes long-time leadership in Greater Mohican Audubon Society and Richland County Master Gardeners. She currently serves two land trust boards and works as an environmental educator and advocate for nature.

Co-founder of Flora-Quest, she writes a native plant, bird and butterfly blog for its website, Weedpicker's Journal, at www.cherylharner.blogspot.com.

The Ohio State University Extension (OSUE) Master Gardener Volunteer (MGV) Program is an educational program designed to meet the consumer
horticulture needs of Ohio citizens. Its purpose is to train volunteers and utilize their expertise to teach people more about plants and pests, their culture and their importance to the environment and to our quality of life.
