NEW HOLLAND - A man was killed Monday morning while working on his car in the driveway of his New Holland home.
Barry G. Knapp, 59, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after rescue crews arrived.
According to reports, Knapp had been having problems getting his purple Dodge Neon to shift into reverse and was working on it Monday morning when the accident occurred.
"According to his neighbors, he had been messing with it trying to get it fixed," said Deputy Stephen Harger, Pickaway County Sheriff's Office. "In doing so, he had the car running while he was under it, and it must have jumped into gear. He was pinned underneath the car."
Harger said a neighbor discovered Knapp in the driveway of the home at 168 W. Front St. and called 911 about 9:04 a.m., reporting that he was under the car and unresponsive.
Fayette County EMS and medics from the Pic-A-Fay Joint Fire District used an air bag system and wooden blocks to raise the vehicle and extricate Knapp.
Dr. Michael Geron, assistant Pickaway County Coroner, also assisted at the scene.
Harger said the accident remains under investigation.
