CIRCLEVILLE - State Senator Bob Peterson expects to be back to work soon following a traffic crash that sent him to a Columbus hospital Tuesday night.

"He's doing fine," said Joshua Eck, press secretary for the Senate Majority Caucus. "A broken bone in his hand was the only real injury from the accident. He's hoping to go home (Wednesday night) and hopefully will be back to work quickly."

Peterson, 52, of Sabina, was injured when his 2008 Dodge Caravan struck the back of a semi truck while traveling southbound on I-71 in Pickaway County about 9:22 p.m. Tuesday, according to the West Jefferson Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Peterson had to be extricated from his vehicle and was transported by MedFlight to The Ohio State University Medical Center for treatment.

According to reports, he told emergency crews he was distracted by reaching for something in the passenger seat when the crash occurred.

In a statement, Peterson said he was very grateful for everyone's prayers and well wishes following the accident.

"I especially want to thank the EMTs, law enforcement, nurses, doctors and the two men who talked and prayed with me while we waited for emergency personnel to arrive after the accident," he said.

Peterson said he is most grateful that no one was seriously injured.

"I'm reminded today of how precious life is and how great our community is as you see friends and strangers alike step up to offer a helping hand," he said.

Peterson represents Ohio Senate District 17, which covers Clinton, Fayette, Gallia, Highland, Jackson, Pike and Ross counties, as well as parts of Lawrence, Vinton and Pickaway counties.
