WAYNE TOWNSHIP - A wandering cow caused two separate crashes Wednesday on state Route 104 near Dungan Road, and additional cows were reportedly on the loose.

According to Corporal Chris Hempstead, Pickaway County Sheriff's Office, the vehicles each struck the cow within minutes of each other about 10:10 p.m. Wednesday.

Hempstead said the first vehicle, a 2005 Subaru Legacy driven by Amanda K. Barnes, 31, of Columbus, was traveling southbound on state Route 104 when it struck the animal standing in the roadway.

The cow was thrown into the northbound lane, where it was then struck by a 2001 Chevy Silverado driven by Bob Yoder, 43, of Grove City, according to Deputy Jeremy Wallace.

Patricia Yoder, 42, a passenger in the second vehicle, was transported to Adena Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Wallace said.

Hempstead said Barnes also was transported to Adena for treatment of minor injuries.

The cow did not survive.

While on the scene, deputies were notified an unknown number of additional cows had escaped the nearby farm and were likely running loose on Route 104 south of the accident scene and into Ross County. Deputies were aided by the Ohio State Highway Patrol in a search for the missing livestock.

Hempstead said Thursday morning that one additional cow had been located overnight and was returned to the pasture.

EMS crews from Williamsport Fire and Southwest Pickaway Fire District also assisted at the scene.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This article was updated at 7:16 a.m. April 30 to amend direction of travel and hospital transports and to update the status of additional cows.
