Village seeks to appoint council member

ASHVILLE - The village of Ashville is seeking resumes from residents who may be interested in serving on village council.

The chosen applicant will complete the term of council member Jim Mathers, who passed away earlier this month. Applicants must reside in the village of Ashville and be registered to vote, according to Franklin Christman, village administrator.

"According to the rules of council, council has 30 days from notification of the vacancy to appoint," Christman said. "After that, it falls to the mayor to appoint a replacement."

The 30-day period began Feb. 23, Christman said. Resumes from interested parties are requested by March 9 to allow time for council members to review the applications and choose a replacement.

"That would give council some time to decide before the council meeting on March 16," Christman said. "Technically, it could go right up to that timeframe, but that would allow no deliberation by council unless they knew the individuals applying. Having the letters of interest and resumes by March 9 we felt would give them adequate time."

Mathers was appointed in May of 2012 to replace Gayle Blankenship, who resigned and moved away from the village. He then won the office in the general election in November of 2013.

His current term expires at the end of 2017, Christman said.

In addition to serving on village council, Mathers, 78, was a member of Village Chapel United Methodist Church, past conference president of United Methodist Men, a member of Ashville Kiwanis, Lockbourne Lodge #513 F&AM, Aladdin Shrine, Southeast Shrine Club, and was involved in prison ministry (One Community Ministry & Kairos).

Mathers passed away Feb. 2 at Genesis Healthcare in Circleville.
